Electronics & ESD Packaging

Anti-static, VCI, standard LDPE, and custom tubing options for electronics and metal components, selected from the required ESD, corrosion, and handling controls.

Understanding Electronics & ESD Packaging

Electronics packaging must match the hazard. Pink anti-static polyethylene reduces charge generation; it is not a static-shielding system. VCI addresses compatible-metal corrosion and does not automatically provide ESD protection. Plain LDPE thickness can change handling and moisture transmission, but it is not the same as a dedicated barrier structure. Requirements must be stated before material is selected.

From Our Factory Floor

How M Plastics Approaches Electronics & ESD Packaging

Electronics packaging requires the protective property to match the actual risk. Pink anti-static poly, static-shielding structures, VCI packaging, and plain LDPE bags are not interchangeable. Our team begins by asking what the component is, how sensitive it is, how long it will be stored, and which customer or military specification controls the job. We then manufacture only within the capability of the selected material and documented requirement.

Common Electronics & ESD Applications

  • Electronic components and assemblies
  • Circuit boards, cables, and connectors
  • Metal parts requiring corrosion protection
  • Production, storage, and service kits

What We Need to Build the Right Package

Provide the device sensitivity, required surface resistance or shielding standard, moisture and corrosion risks, MIL or customer specification, dimensions, closure, storage period, and test documentation. The customer should approve the final protective system.

Packaging Challenges to Resolve

  • Device sensitivity may require shielding beyond anti-static poly.
  • Boards, leads, and heat sinks can puncture or abrade a tight bag.
  • Metal compatibility, humidity, cleanliness, and storage affect VCI selection.
  • Customer or military specifications must be supplied with revision and test criteria.

Construction and Feature Guidance

  • Anti-static lay-flat bags or tubing can support suitable handling applications.
  • Standard LDPE is appropriate only where no special ESD control is required.
  • VCI bags and tubing are reviewed for compatible metals and enclosure conditions.
  • Closures, labels, and desiccants must be considered as part of the protection system.

From Film Specification to the Packing Line

Material and mil thickness

Specify required electrical properties, shielding, corrosion protection, mil thickness, and documentation. No MIL-SPEC claim should be made until the exact revision, material, test, and production requirements are reviewed.

Manual and Automated Packing

Assess grounding, workstations, operator handling, automated insertion, heat sealing, and label placement. Packaging cannot compensate for an uncontrolled ESD process.

Testing and Limitations

Customer engineering should approve the final system and test it under storage and shipping conditions. Anti-static color alone is not evidence that required electrical performance has been achieved.

A material declaration or FDA-grade resin does not approve a finished package for every product or process. The customer remains responsible for application-specific regulatory review and validation.

Electronics & ESD Packaging FAQ

Practical answers from a manufacturer. Final specifications are confirmed for your product, equipment, and use conditions.

Are pink anti-static bags the same as static-shielding bags?

No. Anti-static poly reduces charge generation but does not provide the same shielding as a metallized static-shielding structure. Specify the protection level required.

Can VCI and anti-static protection be combined?

Options depend on the metal, electronic assembly, storage environment, and required electrical properties. Our team can review the application with the material supplier.

Can you manufacture to a MIL specification?

Potentially, when the material, testing, documentation, and production capability match the cited specification. Provide the complete revision for review before quoting.

How should we approve the final electronics bag?

Review a production-representative sample with the actual product, packing method, closure, storage, and distribution conditions. Approval criteria should be documented before the full run.

What should we send with a quote request?

Provide the device sensitivity, required surface resistance or shielding standard, moisture and corrosion risks, MIL or customer specification, dimensions, closure, storage period, and test documentation. The customer should approve the final protective system.
